Peace Month Program & Open Reading

The Greenbelt Writers Group will be meeting this Friday, June 18 at The Greenbelt Community Center from 7:30-9:30pm. In addition to open readings, we will have a special program, led by Marj Donn. This is Peace month and Marj will lead us in some spontaneous Haiku writing in commemoration of peace.

How and Where Tips On Getting Your Work Published, a talk by John Hayes

As part of our meeting on Friday, May 21 from 7:30-9:30pm, The Greenbelt Writers Group is pleased to present: How and Where Tips On Getting Your Work Published, a talk by John Hayes.

John Hayes will offer suggestions on where and how to send work to publishers. He will discuss the value of rewriting and following publisher guidelines. He will explain how he overcame his fears of rejection and a self-defeating belief that his writing was unique.

John writes plays, poems and short fiction and receives about twenty acceptances a year from the small literary press.

Join us for this talk, our usual open reading, and business meeting at the Greenbelt Community Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Back in 1922 in his poem The Waste Land T.S. Eliot wrote that
"April is the curellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain."
It seems that an abrupt emergence of life can be jarring after a long dead dry period. The GWG remains steady in our pursuit to write, read, and engage all in literary arts. We spring into action this April with two lively events:

At our Open Reading on Friday the 18th we are delighted to welcome Audra Barrett, a Literary agent, as guest presenter. “Find out what books are selling and determine marketplace voices you can fill,” is just one of Ms. Barrett’s career tips. Ms. Barrett is a Prince George County resident who believes in supporting writers in the publishing industry. She has much information and insight to share. January, month of new beginnings. The group is seven. We gather about a round table.

This evenings art is poetry, a short story, and non-fiction.
We hear a poem inspired by tragic news. We listen to a poem about reading aloud. We hear a short story involving a man from a long time ago. We learn about multi-media, podcasts and issues confronting school media specialists. We read to each other and we discuss.

As it must be the time for art transitions into the time for business.
Tonight's business is influenced by the art about communication. How can you hear us? How can we reach you? How can you read us? How can we engage you? How about a blog?
